I haven’t written a “technical/instructional” blog post in a while so here goes:
I have been asked how do people put a video segment from TV onto the internet? Well, this is one way to do it. It’s probably not the quickest way, but it is the free way. You don’t have to purchase any special software to do it but you do need to already have a DVD Recorder. I got mine at Best Buy for under a hundred bucks. For you beginners a DVD Recorder is a device that records anything on your cable and puts it on a DVD. Just like a VCR used to do in the 90’s
. I highly recommend them for recording your favorite programs! With Tivo or DVR you will eventually delete the program but with DVDs they are forever! Now I’m going to discuss how they can also help you add video files to your computer:
Step One - Record: Insert a DVD-RW or DVD-R into your DVD Recorder (I recommend a rewriteable DVD). Set it to record the TV program that is on your cable/Tivo/DVR. When finished simply eject the DVD (”finish” the DVD beforehand if it’s not a rewriteable disc).
Step Two - Transfer: Insert the DVD into your computer. Browse the files that are on the DVD. Windows users can do this under “My Computer” by right-clicking and selecting “explore” on your DVD drive. DVD’s record videos from your TV into .vob files. Find the VOB file you want to “rip” and transfer/copy it to your computer or desktop. (If you’re not sure which VOB file it is, just double-click on it. Most Windows programs will allow you to watch VOB files on your computer.)
Step Three - Convert: Now you need to convert the .vob file to a normal/compressed movie file such as an .avi, or .mpg. AutoGK is a popular (and free!) program you can download online that will convert .vob files to these file types. I recommend you convert the files to .avi or .mpg if you want to edit them with “Windows Movie Maker” which comes with Windows XP.
Step Four - Edit: If you want to add effects/text/logo to your video file or if it is too large of a file - you need to edit it before uploading to the internet. Windows Movie Maker is what I use because it’s free and it came with my computer. After adding effects the video editor will ask you what bitrate you want. I recommend a 512 kbps bitrate. That’s a good quality bitrate for viewers to stream your video online. If the video is over 5 minutes, then maybe 340 kbps.
Step Four - Publish: YouTube seems to be the most popular way for people to publish their videos. Of course I’m teaching you how to rip stuff from television so if it is copyrighted material you may not want to do that. Viacom is deleting a lot of these copyrighted youtube videos. Dailymotion doesn’t seem to be as strict with copyright but then again it is less popular. There is also always email or uploading to your FTP space if you have a website.
Well there ya go! After these steps you should be able to share and store videos online. I know it’s not the easiest thing to do, but at least this way it’s free!
