Asparagus Makes My Pee Smell

Today I ate some asparagus for dinner and about two hours later I went to take a piss. While I was draining the vein I thought I smelled something rotten in the bathroom. I looked around but didn’t find anything. Then I remembered someone saying a few months ago that asparagus makes your pee smell bad. And it does indeed. So I ran to my laptop to figure out why this happens. Asparagus contains a sulfur compound called mercaptan. It breaks down and releases that smell while in your digestive system. But this is the most interesting part I learned: Not everyone has the enzyme that breaks down mercaptan. In one study in Britain, only about half of the people contained the enzyme and had a foul odor after urinating. Well I definitely know now that I have it. Do you? Eat some asparagus, go to the bathroom, and leave me a comment!

Asparagus does *not* make my pee smell.

And “piss” is such a gross word when you use it as a verb

OMG, I was JUST about to say something about using the word “piss.” It is so gross, Chris, and I have NEVER heard you say that in real life. Change it to “teedle” or “tinkle” or “wee-wee!”

But, to answer your question, yes, my pee stinks when I eat asparagus. A lot.

Hey. It surely does. Other funny thing about asparagus is that it and red wine DO NOT go together. Someone told me, I didn’t believe it, but it’s just awful.

I tried. I think I lack of the enzyme you mentioned. There was no odor as you described.

I have that enzyme and I guess a few others. just about every food that is good seems to have that effect, lol.

I’m finding it funny that people are testing this out, lol! I’m not sure if it makes my pee smell, the last time I ate it was awhile ago, and I’m not really an asparagus fan…

Asparagus is very good! I did notice that it makes your pee smell, it is pretty bad. Very interesting that some people do not have the enzyme! Interesting!

Interesting because I never knew about this enzyme either… I could never understand why everyone said asparagus makes their pee smell… now I know cuz my pee don’t stink!

Mercaptan is the same stuff they add to natural gas to give it an odor in case it leaks-who knew.

You know what?
Mercaptan is a bad smelling compound and LPG gases that are available in most of the countries, and gas leakage is detected by adding ethly merceptan. I never ate asparagus.

Yup, happens to me too. I love asparagus, but I hate the aftermath - that foul smell when urinating! Ugh! Same thing happened to me: First time I noticed it (many years ago), I thought something was wrong with me, physically. I backtracked a few hours and remembered I had eaten asparagus. A couple of minutes researching online gave me the answer, as you discovered.
