I had to undergo a little training when I got my Mac a while back. Actually, it’s more like Windows detox than anything else.

My top software:
smultron
VLC (indispensable)
Adium
iStumbler
Quicksilver (indispensable)
Google Earth
Bean
NeoOffice
Burn
Defcon (Game - Demo is playable)
Quinn (Game - freeware)
Democracy
Joost
DooDim
Handbrake
iBackup
SerialBox (serialz.to)
KisMac
Shiira
Simon Extreme (Game)
Unison (paid - usenet reader)
tvshows
transmission
xee (better than preview for image viewing)
psst
Vienna

Sorry, I’m too lazy to find links for all of those, but that is about a year of looking for new awesome apps and those are the ones I use on a regular basis. They’re ALL freeware too, unless otherwise noted.

A lot of people will say Firefox, but I would say start with Safari and keep it if you can get used to it.

If you ever want to talk mac, hit me up. (AIM: gthing32)

Such a hot pic.

Adium Adium Adium! It basically combines yahoo messenger, mac talk, google chat, aim all into one tabbed messenger. And it has a cute little duck for an icon too! :)

I’ve been looking at getting a macbook. You’ll have to post what you think of it on here after using it for a while.

Here’s my top list for Mac proggies (been Mac user for a long time, writing this on my black Macbook :D )

* Quicksilver (best launcher and random app ever)
* Virtue Desktops (virtual desktops for Mac, can’t live without them)
* Adium (best IM multi protocol for any platform)
* Transmission (my choice for torrent downloading)
* Acquisition (Peer 2 Peer downloads)
* CocoaMySQL (for all your database admin needs)
* Transmit (Best. FTP. EVER)
* Yojimbo (cool program to organize and categorize and tag your text files)
* TextMate (awesome text editor for all the PHP and HTML editing)
* AppZapper (application uninstaller)
* VLC (multi platform media player)

I think most of these are open source and/or free, a couple aren’t (like TextMate and Acquisition) but well worth the license price. Hope you find these useful.

Oh, also, I get the feeling you’re a web developer of some kind from reading your blog, so you might wanna check out these PHP and MySQL binaries for Mac:
http://www.entropy.ch/software/macosx/php/
just so you don’t have to compile yourself heh.

I was thinking of getting a Mac laptop. My current Windows XP one is already kinda slow, and I have absolutely no desire to inflict Vista on myself. So I’m exploring Macs. And everyone I know that has ‘em just LOVES ‘em, almost like groupies or Scientologists in their devotion! It wouldn’t even be a question of staying with Windows, but it seems like so many of my Windows-created files can be read by Macs now! So really the choice seems simple. I just wish I had the money laying around :D

Well, if it’s a matter of money, try to get a friend who’s going to school or college to buy it for you. They get quite a nice discount.
