First off, the definition of favicon according to wikipedia is “Short for ‘favorites icon’, also known as a page icon or an urlicon, is an icon associated with a particular website or webpage.” Or in plain English - that little picture thingy next to the url in your address bar.

Normally you would have to make a 16×16 pixel .png photo and then convert that into an .ico file to make a favicon. However, now all you have to do is go to htmlkit.com and it will make your favicon from any photo instantly - and for free! You then upload the converted .ico file to your root directory. The site also gives you the html tag to put on your site so the icon will show for all of your visitors. I just made mine yesterday. I couldn’t think of a good photo to use, so I just put up a picture that shows half my face (like I’m peeking at you while you’re on my blog haha.)
Do you have to have a favicon for your site? No, but more and more sites are starting to use them and it will give visitors who favorite your site a little icon to remember you by in their bookmarks.

I love this post. I’d love to have a flavicon. Unfortunately, there’s always that one step which the blogfully impaired cannot get past. This time it’s the unfathomable “You can add a favicon to your web page by uploading favicon.ico to your
website and inserting the following HTML tag inside the …
section of your web page.
Yea, okay. What?
Oh, well–your post is a great one!
Quick question: Where’s your favicon? lol but anyways very nice post. Do you know how to create customize icons w/o much photoshop experience?
great info…i was wondering how to do that. Now, the only question is, what am i gonna use.
Baseball Investor, you could use a baseball as your favicon!
I know, I don’t know where I come up with these great ideas either.

For Wordpress users put the full address of your .ico file in the header. When I just put “favicon.ico” and not the full address the favicon would not show up on archived posts.
Sites without favicons is a small little pet peeve I have. I like to drag my favorite sites into my bookmark bar in firefox and when a site doesn’t have one, I usually have to put on in, purely for aesthetics.
Thanks for the tip.
I appreciate the post and link. I have wanted to make a fav icon but always seemed to have 25 other things that seemed more important.
I also showed my new fav icon to an online friend and now he is setting up his own.
thanks
So going to do this….as soon as my logo is redesigned.
oh, it’s nice tips. I always consider how to do this until i reach your post.
Thank you.
An icon in the web browser tool bar is handy when someone book marks your website.
